My Family
So my family is something to behold. As many of you know my parents are divorced, and my father has remarried to a woman who has 4 kids and 11 grandkids. Meanwhile my mother has a giant scarlet "D" hanging around her neck. This leaves my siblings and I in a pickle about celebrations and such. Now when something universal like christmas or a sibling birthday occurs we do one night at mom's and one night at dad's. However when something happens for my dad it is far from simple. Take his birthday, today as it happens, we have a party for him with her family, the wife, and then there was one for our family. This gets out of control for me, not because of gift giving. That happened at the smaller party. But the way that the parties occur and the level of stress caused by the two parties. Sunday we met at his club with all of her family and her friends, but his flesh and blood was invited as a courtesy. Then at the smaller party, at the local semi-dress place that needs to be burnt down, we are treated to looks and bad conversation by the wife over what was given. This was probably because all he ever asks for are dress shirts and he most likely got forty or so from the other party.
But that is not what truly upsets me, annoying as it is. What honks me off is when one or more of my sibs get her panties in a bunch over the first party and demands a second one, the complains later about having to go to the second party. And that this usually happens for anything that my dad and his wife throw a big party over.
This is why I LOVE my family.

This is why I often wish that I could *choose* my family.

Oh, the Flame is still open. From the menu to the "stained glass" windows to the tree in the bar, it's like stepping through a time warp.
And the food's not even all that good.
As far as choosing your family goes, I inadvertantly came up with the solution to that one: move multiple states away. Your genetic family is like a novelty, and your everyday family becomes one of your choosing.
